Now that you have the big stuff out of the way, it’s time to get other crucial pieces in order. From your vendors to your wedding party to your attire, this is the time when you need to sharpen your organizational, time management and negotiation skills because there are a lot of pieces to juggle!

PART II: DO IN THE FIRST MONTH

Round out the team. Get the rest of your vendors in place. This is typically the hardest part of the process because there are so many people, teams and details involved, but here are the vendors that are most commonly hired:

1. Officiant
2. Caterer (if food and beverages are not included with your venue)
3. Photographer
4. Florist
5. Band/DJ
6. Videographer
7. Transportation

Finalize your wedding party. Most brides and grooms have their wedding party in tact days after the engagement, but if this is not the case, now is the time to make sure your bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls and ring bearers have been formally asked to be a part of your wedding party and are available to participate in the wedding festivities.

Find a dress. Most traditional wedding dresses are made to order and take 12-16 weeks to order, not including time for alterations. Many salons will have rush orders available, but if you want to play it safe, your best bet is to buy a ready to wear dress. But do go try on dresses anyway if not for the experience. And who knows, you might just find something that works with your budget and timeline!

• Off the rack: David’s Bridal, Light In the Box and other local boutiques in your city should carry a number of off the rack gowns.
• Online: Sites like J. Crew and BHLDN have a gorgeous selection of gowns that ship quickly and accept returns.
• Search for long white dresses and you’ll find some great options at places like Nordstrom,Bloomingdales, Shopbop, Neiman Marcus. We are big fans of this Alice & Olivia gown and this Theia dress.

• Go for color: Colorful dresses are a huge trend in weddings – from grays and golds to blush, pinks and greens, there’s nothing more memorable than adding a subtle hint of color to your dress. How gorgeous are these dresses? (Jenny Yoo, David Meister, Badgley Mishka)

• Pre-owned: You can get a gorgeous used designer dress in your size and in your city if need be for a fraction of the cost. We’ve even seen dresses selling for over 70% off that have never been used! Consider searching PreOwnedWeddingDresses, OnceWed, Tradesy, or HustleYourBustle.
• Rent: These days, you can rent just about anything, although in our humble opinion renting a wedding gown is a bit risky.
• RentTheRunway.com: Most dresses and gowns can be rented for under $200 and you’ll receive your dress in more than one size.
• Adorn.com: We love the idea of wearing some serious bling on your big day
• HappilyEverBorrowed.com: Rent your sash, tiara, veil and even clutch. And for $50, you can even borrow up to three pieces to bring to your dress fitting. When you return them, you get $25 off of the rental price. Not a bad deal!

Bridal party attire: The easiest way to outfit your bridesmaids is to let them pick a dress in a specific color scheme. That way, the work is off of your plate. But if you want your girls to be in uniform dresses, here are some options:

• The infinity dress
• J. Crew
• Etsy
• BHLDN
• Ann Taylor
• David’s Bridal

Invitations: These need to go out 6-8 weeks before your wedding, so you need to finalize your invitations, wording, and guest lists. Luckily, there are dozens of local invitationers, invitation sites and printing companies out there.

• Minted: If you’re comfortable doing the process online, Minted has a fabulous invitation suite that is fully customizable (yes, they even have letterpress and board paper)

Registry: Did you know that couples return over half of the gifts they receive? If you are registering for gifts, now is the time to set one up, and do put some thought into what you actually NEED (i.e. kitchenware) vs. want (i.e. fine china). Some people register for a honeymoon fund, contributions for a down payment on a home,outdoor gear, electronics, and pretty much anything and everything under the sun. Most commonly, people register at a department story (Macy’s or Bloomingdales) and a home goods store (Crate and Barrel, Williams Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond) and all are very easy to set up.

All that is left are the details, which we cover in part 3 of this planning series.

So when the party planner is you (the novice) and the party is only the most important day of your life (your wedding), the stress factor multiplies tenfold.  Add a tight timeline into the mix and you’ll be having martinis at 4pm every day. We kid, we kid. Actually, it is very doable to plan an ultra amazing, fabulous wedding in three months (or less). With a little organization, some guidance on how to prioritize and some help from the experts, the accelerated wedding planning process can be stress free and, dare I say, enjoyable?

The shotgun wedding planning process is conveniently broken out into three parts.

1. First are the do immediately tasks. They’re the don’t waste another nanosecond, get on the phone, send out some emails, scout out some venues, have the conversation get it done type of tasks.
2. Second are the do the first month tasks. These are the major ones – the time consuming, difficult decision making, must be organized tasks. Except for wedding dress shopping. That should always be a fun experience.
3. And all the rest? Just the details. The pretty stuff, the little touches, the smaller tasks that all add up to making the wedding a reflection of yourself.

PART 1: DO IMMEDIATELY

Set your budget. The sooner you can have the money discussion out of the way, the sooner you can start making decisions and signing contracts. Both you and your fiance (and anyone else who will be footing the bill for the wedding) should have a very clear picture of who will be paying for the wedding, what your budget is and how it breaks down. And once you have arrived at an agreement, make sure everybody is clear on it and on the same page because the one rule in wedding planning (especially on a tight timeline) is NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING. Expect miscommunication. Expect things to fall through the cracks. But if you confirm, double confirm and spell things out, there won’t be any confusion among the key financial players.

Prioritize & Answer the Hard Questions: You will need to make a lot of quick decisions over the next few months, so now is the best time to prioritize the things that are important to you and get rid of the rest. It’s an interesting time for weddings – the majority of planning happens online, things move quickly and the old rules are becoming obsolete. There are many traditional brides out there, but there are also a growing number of unconventional brides who make up their own rules for their wedding. Remember, there’s a difference between being courteous and respectful vs. hanging onto old traditions for the sake of it… just some food for thought as you sort out your wedding priorities such as:

• How many guests?
• Are kids included?
• Do you want your ceremony and reception to be at the same place?
• What are the three things that are important to us? Booze? A band? Flowers? More booze?
• Where are the three areas that we can save money on, assuming budget is tight?
• Will you have a rehearsal dinner? Who is paying for it?
• Are you going to have an engagement party?
• Are you going on your honeymoon directly after?

Lock Down Your Venue. Hopefully you won’t need to scramble for a venue, but if you are starting from scratch, you need to get on the phone and start calling around immediately. The popular venues will likely be booked up, but if you really love a particular place, it can’t hurt to reach out especially if you are open to a Friday or Sunday wedding or something earlier in the day. Who knows – they might have last minute cancellations or a random opening. Don’t fret, there will be plenty of options to choose from, no matter where you live.

If you’re willing to be a little more creative, consider:

• A private room at a restaurant
• Backyard or someone’s home
• A zoo, park or garden
• Your alma mater
• An art gallery
• A newly opened venue
• A bowling alley
• A nightclub
• A venue in a smaller town

I’ve heard stories of people getting married in parking garages to laundromats to old warehouses, so don’t be afraid to to be unconventional.

[If you are strapped for time, now is the time to hire a wedding planner, who can help you find a venue, assemble a team of great vendors and keep you on track. A good wedding planner will know all of the great local spots, have a reliable network of professionals to partner with and can help you execute on your vision. ]

Send Save the Dates. It can be as simple as an email announcement, but with the wedding just months away, you do need to compile your guest list and let them know when and where your wedding is to take place, especially if people will need to travel for it. Some resources to look at:

• Google Docs is our favorite for compiling and storing all of your guests and addresses. Share it with your fiance, your maid of honor, your mom who can all help add to, refine and perfect the list.
• WedOverHeels allows you to get a free, full page, ad-free wedding landing page announcing your engagement and wedding date.
• For pretty online save the dates, Paperless Post has dozens of free and paid options

Accommodations: If you are having a destination wedding or have a number of out of town guests, do make some hotel recommendations and, if you can, arrange for a special room rate for your guests so that they can reserve well in advance.

Once you’ve finished these crucial wedding planning tasks, you can breathe a quick sigh of relief and move on to part II which is all about vendors, attire & guests! 

We’re wedding planning in an age where constant connectivity and instant feedback is the norm. We post a question on a forum and receive a reply within minutes. We refresh our favorite blog and a fancy new post has gone live. And our Pinterest boards – well there’s no limit to how much time we can spend on those. It’s expected. It’s addicting. And we rationalize this behavior. “It’s my wedding damnit and I’ll obsess as much as I want to!”

So with a list of a hundred things to do and another hundred to buy, it’s no wonder wedding planning is so overwhelming. And no wonder it seems like we never get anything done.

WHAT’S A STRESSED OUT BRIDE TO DO?

For the stressed out bride who needs a minute to disconnect and get back on track, allow me to propose (haha) something – Do one thing at a time.

It’s easy in theory, extremely difficult to execute. Trust me. I’m the ultimate hyper-connected millennial.

“But I pride myself on being a great multi-tasker!”, you say. “I thrive on pressure!”. Yes, we all do. And that’s exactly how things go from controlled to crazy. And one thing your wedding should not be is crazy.

THE EXPERIMENT

Maybe, just as an experiment, you create a new type of wedding ‘to do’ list. Don’t put more than 5 things on it and that includes time for blogs, Pinterest and forums. Start with the most difficult task, or the one that’s the least fun for you and focus on that and only that. Crush it. Resist the urge to let distractions get the best of you (and they will be more enticing and beautiful than every before). Once it’s done, move on to the next item on your list, and then the next. And once you are done with your 5 things, please, be done with all things wedding for the day.

Try it just for today, and maybe tomorrow too.  Give it your best. Chances are, you won’t be perfect, but maybe – just maybe, you will become a little more efficient, a little more calm and a little more sane. A welcome thing, one would think, amidst the craziness of wedding planning.

Paper: For the DIY lover, paper cake toppers are a fun project to try. Add some colorful paper poms, pinwheels or flowers to your cake for an easy, gorgeous looking wedding cake.  (Pinwhirls, JojoBeanDesigns) The Green Vase)

Bride & Groom Figurines: Ah, yes, the bride and groom cake topper. You can find anything from vintage to romantic to silly.

Twigs & Branches: For a woodsy, Midsummer Night’s Dream type of effect, consider using branches or twigs whether they be live, sandblasted or edible!. (DriftingIdeas, AndieSpecialtySweets)

 Jewelery/Tiaras: Why not add an actual tiara, family heirloom or piece of jewelry to the top of your wedding cake? (DecoratingStudio)

Crystals: Add a bit of sparkle with crystal cake accessories from sprays, studs and brooches to any sort of shape. (ShopByApril, CoutureCakeJewelry, FavorsBy Serendipity)

Lights: A single candle might be a bit too birthday, but we love the idea of sparklers, candles and lights on your cake to give it a festive or romantic glow.

For traditional dresses, Mermaid Bridal: For more traditional dress styles in a multitude of colors, do check out Mermaid Bridal. They offer a wide variety of affordably priced short and long bridesmaids dresses that we think are so pretty.

For ultra affordable frocks, Onor Fashion: Aside from the adorable designs, these dresses are super affordable (many under $50) and with a 100% positive feedback rating and over 1000 sales, how can you go wrong?

For vintage printed dresses, Penny Pardy: If you’re having an outdoor, rustic or vintage wedding, a floral or printed dress might be the perfect thing for your maids!

Pinterest (free): A no brainer, Pinterest is a must have for every bride, and their app could not be easier to use.

Lover.ly (free): A wedding search engine, you won’t find more beautiful photos than here, and their newly released iPhone app allows you to explore by category and color, and add your own photos (privately) to store. We’re quite impressed with this app.

To keep your guests in the know…

AppyCouple ($28 for couples setting up their wedding site): This nifty app allows you to compile all of your wedding information into one beautiful looking app or coordinating websites for the non smartphone users. From wedding details to RSVPs, to social network connections, to streaming and sharing photos, this truly is the ultimate wedding app for staying connected with your guests.

To help you stay organized…

WeddingWire (free): We’re big fans of WeddingWire.com so it’s no surprise that we love their mobile app, that has checklists, forums, inspiration, registry information and vendor guides.

Couple (Free): My husband and I had some fun with this app (you both have to sign up if you want to use it). You can share notes, lists, photos, videos, sketches, and you can even do this funny “thumb kiss” where your thumb print appears on the other person’s screen if you are both using the app. So if you are looking for a fun way to stay connected with your fiance – and stay on top of him/her, this is a fun little app! I thought it was super cute – just not sure how on board the boys will be with yet another tool. Case and point, my little love notes were met with – well – just see below. (Yes, I am aware that my husband cannot spell).

TeuxDeux (Free): If you’re looking for a super simple and sleek to do list, this is your app. There’s no sharing, no fancy bells and whistles, just a beautifully designed app to help you stay on to of your daily to do lists. This is my personal lifesaver.

For the Do it Yourself Lovers…

Craftgawker (free): The mobile companion to Craftgawker.com, this app allows you to search for hand made arts and crafts projects that are submitted from bloggers around the world. Find what inspires you and be directed to their blog post!

Brit.co (free): It’s not a wedding planning app per se, but the folks at Brit.co are expert party planners, DIY-ers and tech geeks. They have so many creative ideas – think Martha Stewart for the digital world.

MakeYourWedding ($9.99): An interactive, digital magazine for the DIY-er, this app is loads of fun. They offer DIY projects based on theme (modern metallic to rustic elegance), complete with detailed instructions, video guides and links to purchase supplies.

To help you find the exact thing you need…

Luxefinds (free): It’s the ultimate color shopping engine. You search by color, or even take a photo of something (like my coffee mug) to use as a guide to find that perfect dress, pair of shoes or accessory.

Etsy (free): Another must have for the bride, Etsy has thousands of unique, handmade items, many of them customizable, for just about every aspect of your wedding.

And just for fun…

Wedding Countdown (free, $2.99 for premium): This app serves no real useful purpose except to get you excited for the big day – so why not! Upload a photo of your venue, your honeymoon destination or yourselves and count down the days and hours until you say “I Do!”

If you’re new to the world of wedding veils, you might want to start with our guide to the different types of wedding veils – from short and sweet to long and flowy. You can also visit your local bridal salons which will have a wonderful assortment of veils in different styles and price ranges. They are worth checking out because there are so many incredible designers who do not sell their veils online.

But if you’re looking for something in particular or looking for a great deal, here are some online stores that are worth paying a visit to.

Justine M. Couture: For traditional veils, lace mantillas and veils with a bit of sparkle and embroidery, look no further than this stunning collection. Have something particular in mind? Create your own perfect veil.

Cassandra Lynne: It’s a one woman shop, but she sure does offer a lot of pretty items – from traditional veils to custom and even colored veils, Cassandra’s pieces are pretty, customizable and affordable.

Andria Bird:  Where modern meets vintage, these veils are ultra unique, at affordable prices.

HushedCommotion: Relatively new on the bridal scene, the handmade hair accessories and veils from HushedCommotion are delicate and feminine. Gold! We love the gold!

BHLDN: They’re a little more vintage in style and a tad more on the pricey side, but BHLDN’s collection of veils are oh so pretty, it would be a crime to not at least take a peek.

Bloom Bazaar: This little shop has quite the unique collection of blusher veils – they are whimsical, fun with lush flowers, petals and spring blooms.

David’s Bridal: You’ll find dozens and dozens of veils here in different lengths and styles, including the White by Vera Wang collection, many of which are under $100.

Light in the Box: This is another hugely popular option for wedding veils. They have hundreds, from blushers to cathedral veils. You won’t find cheaper veils here – many sell for under $10! If you’re not particular on which veil you wear and just want to check the box, look great and not spend a lot of money, this is your best bet.

Etsy: Etsy is a must for brides looking for unique, handmade pieces. Many brides we’ve spoken with are obsessed with the site. Here are a few Etsy shops worth checking out.

Powder Blue Bijou: A wonderful collection of super affordable cage veils as well as traditional wedding veils.

There have been dozens – and even more when you count brides trying on their dresses, getting ready for their weddings and then the weddings never actually happening. While we couldn’t compile every single television wedding dress, here are some of our favorite and most memorable tv wedding dresses.

Downton Abbey – We begin with one of our favorite shows on TV today. Yes, its a period drama, but with the show’s popularity and the upcoming Great Gatsby movie, 20s style is very on trend. Both Lady Mary and Lady Edith’s simple long sleeved wedding dresses were custom made for the show. And how much do we adore those sparkly headpieces!

Friends – We loved the Monica – Chandler wedding episode. Courtney Cox wore a simple sheath gown from House of Bianchi (no longer in business) for her wedding to Chandler, while Phoebe’s dress was from St. Pucci.

Sex and the City – Charlotte married twice on Sex and the City – for her first she wore a Vera Wang strapless ballgown and the second time she wore a beautiful white silk Badgley Mishka gown.

Grey’s Anatomy: This is one show we couldn’t keep up with, but there certainly were lots of wedding moments. Christina wore Kenneth Pool’s Lana dress for her wedding that she ran out on, while Callie and Arizona wore beautiful Amsale gowns. Izzie walked down the aisle in another Kenneth Pool creation (incidentally the same dress Meredith had tried on an earlier episode).

The Ringer – It was a short lived series on the CW, but the Reem Acra wedding gown Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character wore was just lovely.

Gossip Girl - We stuck with Gossip Girl for the duration of the series and while some seasons were a struggle to get through, we couldn’t get enough of the fashion. Leighton Meester’s character, Blair, wears two Vera Wang creations for her first wedding (the royal one), both of which were stunning, but if we’re being honest, we expected more. We were not disappointed, however, with her jaw-droppingly gorgeous icy blue Elie Saab gown for her wedding to Chuck Bass during the series finale. Always one for the dramatic, Blake Lively’s character wears a gold Georges Chakra couture ballgown and her TV mom wears a Vera Wang gown for her season 2 finale wedding.

Will & Grace: When Grace married Harry Connick Jr.’s character, she wore this very classic strapless $20,000 Vera Wang gown.

Brothers and Sisters: We never got into this show, but we do love Calista Flockhart’s Kitty romantic capped sleeve dress and Emily Van Camp’s (Rebecca) simple beach sheath!

 Revenge: This might be one of our favorite dresses and it looks absolutely stunning on Madeline Stowe (well, everything does). It’s a gorgeous gray hue, also from Vera Wang.

Private Practice: For some reason this dress is not as flattering as we would have liked on Addison, but we love the fact that it is another silver hued dress, a trend that we are big fans of.

Glee: Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry looks chic and sophisticated in her tea length wedding dress (an homage to Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face). Emma actually wears a number of dresses on the show, never to actually get married. We love her lacy Vera Wang gown.

Hart of Dixie: It’s a CW show starring Rachel Bilson that I doubt many people watch, but we thought this dress worn by Jamie King’s character was beyond pretty – chunky necklace and all. It’s Monique Lhuillier’s Flutter dress from her Spring 2012 collection. The girls also wear Monique Lhuiller dresses in a dream sequence, with ore beautiful bold necklaces to match. Love!

Ugly Betty: This is the episode where Posh Spice (our favorite) makes a cameo as Vanessa Williams’ character’s maid of honor. Here, Williams wears a sleek Vera Wang gown down the aisle.

The Wedding Planner (2001): There are a few wedding styles featured in this wedding from Bridgette Wilson’s elegant lacy gown to Jennifer Lopez’ courthouse frock.

Sweet Home Alabama (2002): Reese Witherspoon wears a simple and chic wedding dress with a birdcage veil for her gorgeous southern outdoor wedding.

Star Wars Episode II (2002): Natalie Portman’s Padme wears an intricate, custom made gown for her wedding to Anakin Skywalker.

Legally Blonde 2 (2003): Reese’s Elle Woods wore this blush Reem Acra gown for her wedding to Luke Wilson’s character, but she initially tried on a heavier, more traditional strapless gown.

Princess Diaries 2 (2004): Anne Hathaway looks perfectly regal in this lacy sleeved royal wedding gown custom designed for the movie.

Monster in Law (2005): Jennifer Lopez’s ivory dress by SaeYoung Vu Couture is very simple and chic which she accessorizes with gloves, a floor length veil and a gorgeous flower in her hair.

License to Wed (2007) Although this was not the gown Mandy Moore’s character actually wore on her wedding day, how can you forget the explosion of tulle of this dress?

Marley & Me (2008) Jennifer Aniston donned this satin wedding dress for that beautiful winter wedding scene.  The gown is by Florida based designer Carolina Boulton couture.

27 Dresses (2008)  Katherine Heigl’s character Jane (left) wore a timeless V-neck Amsale wedding gown specifically designed for the movie. Malin Akerman’s character Tess (right) wore the Reese Dress from Amsale’s Spring 2008 collection.

Sex & The City (2008)    Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie tried on an array of amazing dresses by top designers in the movie (if you haven’t seen this Vogue wedding dress clip from the movie, you must!). She ended up with an elaborate champagne silk Vivienne Westwood. Net a Porter carried a shorter version of this dress for $9,800 but was promptly sold out.

The Hangover (2009) Sasha Barresse’s character Tracy Garner wore this strapless silk organza gown “Tyler” by Amsale as she anxiously awaited for her hubby-to-be.  The dress, with the sweetheart neckline and natural waist, retails for $3,700.

Bride Wars (2009): Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway both don equally stunning Vera Wang gowns for their New York City weddings in Bride Wars.

The Time Traveller’s Wife (2009) Rachel McAdam’s Claire wore a dress by Lea-Ann Belter Bridal – a silk organza ball gown with custom details when she married her ever-elusive husband played by Eric Bana.

I Love You, Man (2009) J. Crew lent this “Rebecca Dress” for Rashida Jones’ stroll down the aisle. Costume designer Leesa Evan customized it for the movie with a few special touches.

Mamma Mia (2008) Costume designer Anne Roth designed this three tiered silk chiffon and cotton gown. Layered and lacy, this was the perfect look for Amanda Seyfried at her Greek island nuptials.
